Kawader: preparing young Qataris for
careers in the financial services industry
As part of its strategy to build a knowledge-based economy, Qatar
is investing significant resources to develop its financial services
industry as a key source of sustainable growth for its citizens and
residents alike.
In 2009, the Qatar Financial Centre Authority and the Qatar Finance
and Business Academy partnered to launch Kawader, a unique
training programme and incubator for the next generation of busi-
ness leaders and decision-makers in Qatar’s emerging financial
services industry.
The five-month programme was designed for recent Qatari univer-
sity graduates and young professionals and includes introductory
courses in the key elements of the financial services sector. Kawader
trainees seek internationally recognised professional qualifications
and certifications including those from the Chartered Institute
of Bankers (CIB), the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), and the
International Certificate in Financial English (ICFE). The programme
concludes with a five-week internship in a financial institution. The
internship plays a critical role in consolidating and applying learning
to a real-world professional environment.
For her Kawader internship, Maryam Al-Zahra joined the Legislative
Counsel and Policy departments at the Regulatory Authority. A
June 2016 graduate of Qatar University School of Law, Ms Al-Zahra
worked closely with department staff to draft and amend legis-
lation, the part of her internship she most enjoyed. “Being a law
student, I was able to understand how legislation works, and seeing
the process of drafting laws was fascinating,” she said. She also
attended multiple introductory sessions with other departments in
the core business, including Insurance, Banking and Asset Manage-
ment. “It was an enormously valuable experience,” she continued.
KAWADER “I learned so much from the Regulatory Authority’s wealth of expe-
rienced and highly knowledgeable financial experts.”
